The committee of the Birdie Ball were delighted to present a cheque for £11,500.00 to Rowan Maine of Cancer Research UK  who in thanking the team commented “this was a big event and you should all be very proud of this wonderful achievement, the cash will  be used  towards the research programmes under way to find cures for this disease.”

In 2015 over 2.5million people in the UK had a cancer diagnosis and were fighting this horrible disease. Rhona (Birdie) Clayton was one of them.

A dedicated Mum, wife, sister, daughter, teacher and a wonderful friend to all, her passing has had an incredible impact on everyone who met her.

Having already fought and won her battle with cancer in 2012, we were devastated when we got the news that the cancer had returned in a more aggressive form. In true style Rhona smiled, put on her lipstick and continued her battle with elegance and grace. Never a complaint was uttered from her and anyone who witnessed her fight was left humbled and speechless at her attitude to life.

Over the next two years she battled through chemo appointments, tests, nurse visits and hospital appointments while still managing to give advice and time to all who mattered to her. Weeks before her passing she was even out having dinner at Royal Troon - nothing brought her down!

On the 19th of October 2015 she finally lost her battle and passed away peacefully at home with her family around her.

Left heartbroken but inspired by this remarkable woman her family and friends decided to do something to mark her memory and raise huge amounts of funds to help others, and it had to be big! Together we created The Birdie Ball, a fabulous event which took place on 4th March 2017 in the brand new ball room of the Seamill Hydro hotel in Ayrshire.

All funds raised are going to cancer research United Kingdom (CRUK).and plans will surely start taking shape for the 2019 event for what is going to bi-annually become the premier evening in the Ayrshire calendar. Watch out for plans for the 2018 golf event too!

To help us make the ball the best it could be we planned a full year of fundraising events that the whole team got involved in. To kick the project off a few reluctant volunteers agreed to run a variety of lengths at the Edinburgh marathon weekend from 28th to 29th May 2015,ranging from a 5K to a marathon! Each distance was just as challenging as the next for the differing team members.

Individuals and companies assisted with donations for the Birdie Ball committing to taking one of the sponsorship options for the evening and contributing greatly to the funds raised.

Please donate what you can to this very worthwhile cause. Not just for us and for lovely Rhona but for everyone who has been touched by cancer and for those who have not. You never know when you may be asked to confront this battle on any level. CANCER- WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU!!
